『私には、竜の秘密を知る義務があるの」
ウィンディア王家の王女。兄弟はなく、彼女自身あるいは彼女の配偶者が次の国王になる予定だ。
ウィンディアは飛翼族の国で、国民のほとんどは飛異族だ。ただし現在は祖先の血も薄くなり、そのほとんどは羽根を失っている。そのため、外見上は他の種族との差はほとんどない。その中で、王家の者だけはいまだに比較的大きな羽根を持ち、その血統の濃さを示している。ただし、彼らもすでに飛翔能力は失っており、羽根は単に象徴的な意味となって久しい。
兄弟がないせいか、彼女は王族にしてはかなり伸び伸びと育てられてきた。しかし、いずれは礼儀作法と帝王学の教育が開始される。そして、平和な王国の統治者として、安穏な生涯を送るはずだったのだ。そう、 運命の子・リュウと出会うまでは。

そうした問いを繰り返す内に、彼女は徐々に変わっていった。以前にもまして行動的になり、表だっては反抗しないものの、王や王妃の言葉に疑問を抱くようになった。王族として、自国の民衆を思いやる心を示す方法は、他にもあるのではないだろうか。彼女は、 明らかに父母とは違う独自の道を歩き始めたのだ。
世界の実態を知るために、そして世界の脅威になると言われる幼なじみの運命を見極めるために、彼女はふたたび域を後にする決意を固める。7
Nina the Princess (Childhood)
幼い頃のニーナは、少し勝ち気すぎるぐらいの、活発な女の子だ。積極的で怖いもの知らず、思い立ったら即行動と、まるで男の子のような活躍を見せる。幼いリュウに対しても、姉のよこうな、保護者のような立場となって彼をかばおうとするのだ。
彼女の積極性は、王女として大切に 「育てられたことと、自身の魔法の腕に対する自信によるものだろう。しかし、 ことリュウに関する限り、彼女の積極性は一種の母性本能の現れかもしれない。おそらくそれまで、彼女は人に期待されることはあっても、頼られることは無かっただろう。そんな彼女にとってリュウは、初めて会った「保護すべき相手」だったのだ。
またリュウたちとの旅で、彼女は城の外の生活を初めて体験する。それは、 これまで彼女がまったく知らなかった世界だ。猥雑だが活気に満ち、日々の生活に追われながらも明るさを失わない民衆の姿･･･。この経験が、後の彼女をさらに行動的にしていくのだ。8

Nina is the princess of Wyndia, and is a member of the Wing Clan. Though her people were previously known for their unique ability to transform into large birds, the Wing Clan has gradually lost that ability over the years. Nina tends to be a bit of a busybody, a trait that is fueled by her intense curiosity. Uncertain of what it means to be a princess, Nina joins Ryu on his quest in hopes of discovering a new sense of meaning to her life.9

Trivia
- The clothes Nina wears in-game are considered her casual, “incognito” clothing. Originally, she was planned to wear more princess-like attire.12
- Nina’s design and illustration changed late in development, however her in-game character sprite still adheres to the aesthetics of her original design.
- The Breath of Fire III Memorial Book: Search for the Lost DRAGONS art and lore book lists Nina’s childhood age as “12” and her youth/adolescent age as “15”, however the game does not specify how many years have exactly passed in the narrative.
