Breath of Fire IV PC Now Available on GOG!

Breath of Fire fans, it’s a Dreamlist come true! After campaigning for over a decade, and recent teases from GOG, the PC version of Breath of Fire IV has been FINALLY re-released and made available for digital purchase on GOG (Good Old Games)!

Like the re-releases of Resident Evil 1 – 3 and Dino Crisis 1 & 2 before it, GOG has made Breath of Fire IV DRM-free and optimized the 2003 PC port to work on contemporary PCs and has a humble price tag of $9.99 USD. They’ve even incorporated controller and vibration support, among other improvements, which you can find below:

  • Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11
  • 2 localizations of the game included (English and Japanese)
  • Improved DirectX game renderer
  • New rendering options (Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization Control, Gamma Correction, Integer Scaling, Anti-Aliasing, and more)
  • Improved audio engine (restored missing environmental sounds and audio configuration)
  • Improved keyboard and mouse support
  • Improved Warehouse and Crane minigames
  • Improved F9 exit screen
  • Issue-free battle and combo system (all crashes have been fixed)
  • Issue-free cutscene scripting
  • Issue-free task switching
  • Full support for modern controllers (Sony DualSense, Sony DualShock4, Microsoft Xbox Series, Microsoft Xbox One, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Logitech F series and many more) with optimal button binding, vibration, hotplugging and wireless mode

GOG has posted a blog and video detailing their work on bringing this legendary Capcom RPG back. GOG graciously reached out to Dragnier ahead of the announcement and provided pre-release access to the game last week, and we’ve put together some additional insight and fun content for you to check out in the coming days:

This re-release of Breath of Fire IV is incredibly important for many reasons. It is currently the only way to officially purchase a Breath of Fire game on a contemporary platform. Since the closure of the 3DS and Wii U eShop in 2023, Breath of Fire I & II can only be played on Nintendo Switch by purchasing an online subscription, Breath of Fire III remains digitally purchasable only on PlayStation Vita, Breath of Fire IV’s PS1 version remains digitally purchasable only on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in Japan/Asia/North America, and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is not available for digital purchase at all, having been delisted from Japan’s PS3 Store in 2019. Breath of Fire IV’s release on GOG also marks the first time a Breath of Fire game has been made digitally purchasable worldwide on PC.

With GOG handling a majority of the work in optimizing, re-releasing, and promoting Breath of Fire IV on PC, chances are Capcom might not expect this re-release to push any meaningfully high sales numbers, but this REALLY is where “vote with your wallet” counts! So please, for the sake of Breath of Fire and RPG fans everywhere, buy this release, play it, spread the word, gift an extra digital purchase to your friends, and do what you can to show Capcom that Breath of Fire is still commercially viable!
