Nina can no longer age due to the experiments that were performed on her. She is completely lucid and can understand things said to her just fine, but she is unable to speak. The wings on her back are actually mechanisms developed to purify air, though the continued use of her “wings” carves away at her life. After meeting Nina, Ryu embarks on a quest to save her life by taking her to the surface. Due to this, Nina develops romantic feelings for Ryu.5

Trivia
- In an interesting twist, the normally talkative Nina is now the silent protagonist, whereas the normally silent Ryu now speaks.
- Early designs for the fifth iteration of Nina were more akin to preceding Breath of Fire games, with Nina giving an impression of being a bright, positive, spirited, and tomboyish girl, with her expressions conveying a strong will and sense of initiative. However, as the core of the story became more defined, Nina’s design transformed into more of a frail heroine.8
- At one point in development, Nina had black wings, similar to her Breath of Fire II predecessor.
